Mandolas
The Mandola is a fretted string instrument with four pairs of strings tuned one 5th lower than the mandolin, typically C, G, D, A (low to high). It is the next larger model in the Mandolin family (Mandolin, Mandola, Mandocello, Mandobass) with a smaller body than the mandocello and its construction is like other instruments in the mandolin family. Bob Phillips performs Bach’s first cello suite solo on his Gary Lewandowski mandola; the 15 Two Part Inventions accompanied by Nate Roberts on acoustic guitar; and the very familiar and universally loved Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring with Andrew Lenhart on piano. Throughout he gets a clear, lovely sound on his Gary Lewandowski mandola, with the kind of attention to detail, phrasing, and ensemble (with his able accompanists) that one expects from a musician of his experience and stature. Bob is also a generous soul; the recording is available free to download from the URL above.
